BJJ Beginners Program

BJJ Program

We have developed a dedicated Beginner Pathway Program designed specifically for adults starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This structured system helps new students build confidence, develop skills faster, and understand exactly what to focus on at each stage of their journey. As a result, our beginner retention and progression rates consistently outperform industry averages, with many students continuing their training long after their first class

Tailored Classes

At Apex BJJ, our beginner classes are built specifically for students with little or no previous grappling experience. We place a strong emphasis on fundamental techniques, safety, and skill development in a supportive environment. Students learn at a comfortable pace while building the confidence and foundations needed to progress successfully into more advanced Brazilian Jiu Jitsu training

Our coaching methods and curriculum have been specifically designed to deliver measurable results through structured training, live sparring, and positional development. Most importantly, every aspect of the program is built around safe training practices, allowing beginners to develop skills and confidence in a controlled environment
Beginner Leg Locks
Apex BJJ does not avoid teaching leg lock positions and concepts. Instead, we have developed a structured and safe approach that allows beginners to learn the fundamentals before progressing to more advanced applications. Leg attacks and entanglements represent a major part of modern Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and cannot be overlooked. Our program focuses on proven techniques and systems that are both highly effective and appropriate to teach in a safe training environment
BJJ Womens Class
Our Women's Beginner BJJ classes slow the learning process down to a comfortable and easy to understand pace, creating an environment where new students can build confidence and develop skills effectively. Popular with women from Parramatta, Merrylands, and surrounding areas, these classes are led by experienced female coaches who excel at breaking down techniques into simple, practical concepts. Students develop a strong foundation while steadily improving their offence, defence, and overall understanding of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu
Faster Progression
The Apex program is built around measurable results and consistent progression. Through our structured training system, students develop skills at an accelerated rate and gain confidence much faster than traditional learning methods. By focusing on proven coaching principles and high value techniques, we have dramatically reduced the learning curve and created a pathway that delivers real results for beginners
Blue Belt System
Here are some of our recently promoted blue belts who successfully completed the Apex white belt program. Their dedication, consistency, and commitment to learning have helped them build a strong technical foundation that will support their development well beyond blue belt. Earning a blue belt is a significant achievement in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and an important milestone for both the student and the Apex community, which has witnessed their growth and progression throughout the journey

BJJ Beginner Program Steps

First Step

Every beginner is welcomed by our coaches and staff from the moment they arrive at Apex BJJ. We work hard to create a comfortable and supportive environment for all new students. During your first class, our coaches will explain how Brazilian Jiu Jitsu works, outline important training guidelines, and answer any questions you may have. We will also help you set some initial goals, introduce you to the team, and pair you with a suitable training partner who can help make your first experience both enjoyable and productive

Second Step

The next stage is helping students establish a consistent training routine. Regular attendance is one of the biggest factors in long term success and skill development. Once we identify training times that fit your schedule, we can set clear and achievable goals for each week, month, and quarter. With consistency in place, larger milestones become easier to work towards, whether that is earning your blue belt, improving fitness, building confidence, or preparing for competition if that is something you choose to pursue

Third Step

The final step is simple, keep showing up. Once your first classes are complete and a routine has been established, training quickly becomes part of your lifestyle. As the weeks and months pass, students often look back and realise how much they have changed, both physically and mentally. Consistent training builds confidence, resilience, fitness, and practical skills. Even in the early stages of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, students develop a level of capability and composure that sets them apart from the average untrained person. Expect to see huge results from the program

Tips For Your First Class

Be Mindful of Using Strength Over Technique

When you first start Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, it is natural to rely on strength and try to force your way out of difficult positions. Understanding this tendency early gives you a significant advantage because you can focus on learning technique rather than simply using effort. If you find yourself under pressure or caught in a submission, tap, reset, and use it as a learning opportunity. Think about what led to the position and ask questions after the round. The training culture at Apex is incredibly supportive, and our students are always happy to share knowledge, explain techniques, and help beginners improve

Tap Early and Tap Often

When you are learning Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, every tap is an opportunity to improve. Everyone gets submitted in BJJ. It is completely normal. The students who progress the fastest are often the ones who are willing to learn from mistakes rather than avoid them. Leave your ego at the door and embrace the process, because Brazilian Jiu Jitsu has a unique way of revealing both strengths and areas for improvement. As you train with more experienced students, you will quickly notice the skill differences between belt levels and gain an appreciation for the depth of the art. Remember that the techniques being applied to you today can become the techniques you confidently perform on others tomorrow through consistent training and practice

Concepts over Moves

Concepts in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu answer deeper questions, while individual moves often provide only a quick fix to a small part of the problem. Focusing on concepts gives you greater depth and understanding of the situations you encounter on the mats. At Apex, we have built complete systems around these principles, giving students a clear blueprint for faster progression and a significantly reduced learning curve when followed correctly. Rather than filling your game with isolated tricks, focus on building real knowledge. Concepts consistently work in your favour more than “moves” ever will. Above all, pay close attention to the small details in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, as they make a significant difference over time. Details create iron sharp Jiu Jitsu techniques

How long should I Do beginner BJJ classes?

While our beginner BJJ classes run continuously, we recommend attending them for at least 1 to 3 months when first starting Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. This timeframe is usually enough to become comfortable with the core basics and fundamental movements of the art. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a highly complex system with thousands of techniques that are gradually understood over time. The early journey of a white belt is focused on survival, and through this survival students build resilience. Over time, resilience develops into calmness under pressure, allowing students to recognise opportunities and patterns for escapes, sweeps, and counters. This growing awareness eventually creates the foundation needed to transition from defensive survival into proactive, offensive grappling, bringing you closer to the blue belt level

FAQ

A good idea would be to bring a water bottle Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is an intense workout especially when beginning. Other key things which can be of benefit would be a towel, some sandals to help get on and off the mats easier. And also a bag to carry your belongings an store your valuables. Most gym’s will have trial Gi’s which can be worn if needed for a Gi class. No Gi classes simply require a rash guard and shorts. It might be a good idea to discuss with the gym prior as requirements may vary from gym to gym

Short answer no. Age is not a limiting factor in Jiu Jitsu. Relio Gracie known as the god father of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu was practising BJJ well into his 90’s. Jiu Jitsu is for everyone and at all ages. Training methods will change with age and experience but the fundamentals will be the same

Typically to receive a blue belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu a student must train consistently for a period of 2 years. Students can receive their blue belts sooner if they are training more often. Or if they are have prior experience in martial arts such as Wrestling or Judo.

No. Most beginners are generally not acclimated to BJJ conditioning. Thus finding it difficult as their muscles and lungs get fatigued quickly. However this is temporary, as within a few weeks of training your body becomes more conditioned. BJJ cardiovascular fitness is then built. Most beginners in most sports experience this. It is very normal

There is no set number of classes that will make you “good” at Jiu Jitsu. Everyone develops differently and progresses in their own way. A great head start however would be to attend as many beginner classes as possible in order to decrease your learning curve. Beginner classes develop fundamental skills which help you core Jiu Jitsu game

Yes absolutely. In fact BJJ is one of the best if not the best martial art for women. BJJ teaches the ability of technique over strength which ties in perfectly in defeating males through the use of technique rather than our muscling them. Where this really helps is for self defense and can be a life saving skill to have. Brazilian Jiu Jitsu encourages women to participate for this and many other reasons

In your very first BJJ class you will commonly learn the basic rules of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu. The objectives to defeat your opponent and various positions which score greatly due to their effectiveness. Particularly learning about the guard, more commonly the closed guard. A good beginner class will also teach students various methods of tapping to the opponent and dangerous positions to avoid

Commonly beginners may experience slight bumps, bruises or cuts but major injuries are far less common. It is important to remember that Brazilian Jiu Jitsu is a contact sport and injuries may occur. There are many ways to prevent injuries and two common methods are as follows. 1: Tap out when caught in a submission or bad position. 2: Don’t “spazz out” as most people in BJJ refer to a spazzy white belt being the most dangerous opponent. Roll when you feel comfortable and choose your sparring partners carefully. Some gyms do not monitor new students and this is when injuries can also occur

Kids usually start BJJ from as young as 4 years old. Some have started earlier (3YO). But 4 is commonly a great age in terms of ability and maturity. Kids start to learn rapidly at the age of 4 and start to understand body positioning and technique implementation at 4 years of age.

Once you have a firm understanding of the basics of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu you can attend general classes. For some this may take a week, others a month and some as long as 6 months. It is a great idea to ask your coach or instructor for advice. They will have a good idea of your skill level and can advise accordingly
