Women's Jiu Jitsu Class FAQS

Training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu 2 to 3 times per week for 6 to 12 months can give you the fundamentals to defend yourself against untrained attackers. This includes men if you are a female BJJ student. For more consistent control and confidence in real-life situations, 1 to 2 years of regular BJJ training is highly effective. Achieving a blue belt really makes a woman a real problem for any adult man

Yes Apex offers women’s only Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) classes which usually run for an hour. Each session time is available on our timetable. Womnen’s only classes are run in a private room which provides privacy. The women’s only room is also equipped with a state of the art sound system and applications for Yoga, Pilates and other forms of movement training for BJJ.

Yes of course, some of our members whether it’s for religious practices, their partners requests or just to feel more comfortable can opt to only train with women and also only train separately in a private women’s class if they choose. Apex caters to all members and aims to create an environment that is comfortable for training and developing member’s skills

We place a high level of importance on our female BJJ members. We ask that any female member is ever uncomfortable to skip that particular technique or roll if it is with a allocated training partner. Apex asks our women members to let the coaching staff and team know if ever they feel uncomfortable or need assistance or help. Our team is here to accommodate as best they can

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is widely considered the best self-defense for women because it focuses on technique over strength, allowing smaller individuals to control and defeat larger attackers. Proven effective worldwide, BJJ teaches how to escape dangerous positions, apply submissions, and stay calm under pressure—making it a powerful and practical choice for real-life self-defense.

No not at all. You can choose to watch and only participate if and when you are ready. Some female members just want to drill and learn the techniques and don’t feel ready to actually roll and that’s ok

Rolling with someone who is bigger and stronger can be challenging but it can be a fantastic way to test your techniques. It is best to start slowly and ask the bigger stronger opponent to be careful if they are new to BJJ. However if they are a coloured belt they will almost always look out for our new women members so they are comfortable and not hurt. Rolling with bigger stronger opponents does however  develop mental and physical toughness.

Yes, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is very effective for women. It focuses on technique and leverage, allowing a smaller person to control or escape from a larger attacker. This makes it one of the most practical martial arts for self defense. Along with physical skills, BJJ also helps women build confidence, awareness, and overall fitness.
