Walk into almost any Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu academy, and you are often hit with a wall of unspoken rules. The website hides the prices, the mats feel like a hyper-competitive pressure cooker, and as a complete beginner, you feel like you’ve been thrown straight into the deep end.
When we built Apex BJJ, we set out to completely smash the stereotypes
We didn’t design our academy just for elite competitors. We designed it for the 99% the everyday people, working professionals, and absolute beginners right here in our local community. Whether you are stepping onto the mats to build unstoppable confidence, learn real-world self-defense, or completely shake up your fitness routine, we have built an environment specifically engineered for your success.
Here is exactly why Apex BJJ is the premier destination for beginners in Western Sydney.
Overcoming the “Information Overload” (Our Class Blueprint)
The number one fear we hear from absolute beginners is simple: “I have no idea what I’m doing, and there is just too much to learn.”
They aren’t wrong. Jiu-Jitsu has an incredibly broad knowledge base. If you just jump into a general class, it can feel like trying to learn a new language by reading a dictionary.
At Apex BJJ, we solve this by breaking the martial art down to its absolute core. Our beginner and fundamentals class coaches follow a strict educational blueprint. Instead of overwhelming you, we focus on just two to three core techniques or concepts per class.
To celebrate your initial progress and ensure you are ready for the next step, we award an official Apex Beginner Certification after your first four foundational classes are completed. This is signed and presented by our black and brown belt coaches during your first general class, acknowledging that you are fundamentally sound and ready to thrive.

Safety First: Replacing Fear with Fun
We don’t just talk about beginner safety; we actively engineer it into every single minute of our classes. Every new student is given an immediate crash course on how to tap early, how to find safety positions, and exactly which positions to avoid to circumvent injuries entirely.
When it’s time to drill and train, we don’t leave you to fend for yourself. We hand-select your initial training partners. We intentionally pair our beginners with experienced Blue Belts. Our Blue Belts are trained to guide you through the basics safely, look out for your well-being, and keep the environment controlled. This intentional pairing instantly replaces the initial fear with pure fun.
Safe Wrestling: Defense Before Offense
A lot of gyms completely shy away from takedowns because they don’t know how to teach them safely. At Apex BJJ, we embrace the wrestling side of grappling—but we do it responsibly. Our staff includes a NSW Wrestling Accredited coach, meaning you are learning from the highest standard of coaching available.
Wrestling is incredibly fun, but it can be dangerous if rushed. To eliminate the risk from the equation, we require beginners to complete their foundational program first. From there, we recommend a systematic approach: we introduce basic takedown defense first, and only when you are comfortable do we layer in takedown offense. We slowly introduce this aspect of the sport rather than overwhelming you on day one.
Real Transparency in a World of Hidden Fees
We believe that respect starts long before you step onto the mats. It starts on our website.
If you’ve looked at other martial arts schools around Western Sydney, you’ve probably noticed a frustrating trend: almost everyone hides their membership costs. They force you to hand over your personal details or sit through a high-pressure sales pitch just to find out what it costs to train.
At Apex BJJ, we are fully committed to business transparency. You can view all of our membership options openly on the Apex BJJ Website. There are no hidden registration fees, no locked-down contracts, and zero sales pressure. Our trial students experience an unprecedented 98% retention rate, and our overall membership retention sits proudly at 97% because people love the culture we’ve built.
A Diverse Jiu Jitsu Community Mirroring Western Sydney
Our academy is located in Holroyd, placing us right at the cultural and geographic crossroads of the rapidly growing Cumberland and Parramatta regions.
Western Sydney is one of the most vibrant, diverse, and dynamic communities in Australia. According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) census, the Parramatta Local Government Area (LGA) features immense linguistic diversity, with approximately 61.8% of the population speaking a language other than English at home (Abdi, 2026). Neighboring suburbs like Merrylands and Auburn represent hardworking, multicultural neighborhoods filled with families (Ng et al., 2022).
Because our local community is so diverse, our mat culture is too. We are incredibly lucky to have people from all cultural backgrounds training together. This melting pot means that no matter who you are, you will find common ground on our mats. We pride ourselves on offering an inclusive, welcoming, and ego-free space.
Take a Look Inside Before You Visit
Walking into a new gym can be intimidating, which is why we want to remove the mystery entirely. To help you feel comfortable before you even pack your gym bag, we feature a professional 360-degree virtual tour of our internal space on our Google Business Profile. You can take a virtual walk-through of our clean, spacious mats and premium facilities before you ever walk through our front doors.
If you’ve been thinking about trying Jiu-Jitsu but were worried about getting hurt, feeling out of place, or being overwhelmed, Apex BJJ was built for you.
